How to Measure Salon Gift Card and Coupon Campaigns

Measure salon gift card and coupon campaigns separately using issued value, redemption, incentive costs, completed visits and clearly stated attribution limits.

Gift cards and coupons should not be combined into one vague “promotion revenue” number. A purchased gift card carries value to redeem later; a coupon changes the terms of a qualifying transaction. Track each according to its actual role, then connect the results to customer visits and campaign costs.

Use different core measures

MeasureGift card campaignCoupon campaign
VolumeCards or certificates issuedOffers presented and redeemed
ValuePurchased value, promotional value and remaining balanceDiscount or benefit applied to qualifying sales
Customer activityRedemption visits and additional purchases, where reliably recordedCompleted visits associated with the offer
CostDesign, production, distribution and relevant incentive costsMarketing, incentive and incremental delivery costs

Define the time window

A gift sold in one month may be redeemed much later. Report sales-period activity separately from redemption-period activity. For coupons, record the eligible dates and compare with similar periods. Note holidays, service changes and other campaigns that could affect the result.

Separate attribution from incrementality

A recorded campaign code connects a sale to an offer under your tracking method. It does not prove that the guest would otherwise have stayed away. Some returning guests would have booked at the normal price. Consider that uncertainty before describing all associated revenue as new revenue.

Use a small reporting worksheet

  • Campaign name, dates and eligible locations.
  • Offer terms and the tracking method.
  • Issued value or redeemed coupon count.
  • Completed visits and related transaction amounts.
  • Incentive, marketing and relevant delivery costs.
  • Operational problems and customer questions.
  • Decision for the next campaign.

Review the accounting treatment

Ask your accountant how purchased gift value, outstanding balances, promotional bonuses and redemptions should be recorded. Do not treat unredeemed value as immediate profit or assume the same treatment applies to every product and jurisdiction.

A useful campaign review explains both performance and uncertainty. If the software cannot connect redemptions to transactions reliably, improve that process before presenting a precise return figure.
