A salon gift card needs to look appealing and work at redemption. Before printing, confirm the card’s purpose, the operating system behind it and the information staff and customers will need. Attractive artwork cannot replace a reliable balance and redemption process.

Settle the format first

Decide whether you are designing a stored-value card, a paper certificate for a specific service or a promotional voucher. These can have different operational and legal requirements. Ask the printer and platform provider for the required dimensions, bleed, safe area, material and code specifications before preparing final artwork.

The pre-print checklist

ElementApproval question
BrandAre the correct logo, colors and business name used?
Value or serviceIs the entitlement clear and consistent with the sales process?
RedemptionDoes the customer know where and how to use it?
Code areaDoes numbering, barcode or QR format match the actual system?
TermsAre applicable conditions approved, legible and legally reviewed as needed?
ContactDoes the printed website or phone reach the right business?
Production proofHave size, contrast, trim and scanability been checked?

Keep visual hierarchy simple

Give the brand and gift purpose clear prominence. Keep essential redemption information readable rather than hiding it in very small type. A seasonal motif can add character, but it should not obscure the value, business identity or code.

Test a physical proof

Print a sample at the final size. Check text contrast and the space reserved for writing or variable data. If a code is used, test it with the actual scanner or phone workflow under ordinary lighting. Verify that the code points to the intended destination and does not expose sensitive balance-management functions.

Coordinate design with operations

Document activation, sale, balance lookup, partial redemption and lost-card handling if those functions apply. Ask the team to demonstrate the process before ordering a large print run. Confirm current federal and state requirements for your particular product; use the CFPB gift-card regulation as one reference, not a complete state-law checklist.

Ontiloo’s gift card collection provides design inspiration. Printing, stored-value processing and digital issuance should be confirmed separately in the actual scope.
